Sometimes you know there’s good, and you need to focus on that good beyond anything else. Continue reading Feeling Good, When The Feelings Are Good
Finally finished watching THE REVENANT. Flick is a harrowing study of stress and tension as we join the characters in this broken landscape. It’s a really brilliant look at how long you can grit your teeth to get to the end, only to realise the revenge you saved yourself for isn’t the answer or salvation. In fact, it’s nothing. But you definitely want to do it anyway, because you had nothing left anyway. It’s bleak, real bleak. I absolutely dug it, though admittedly took 4 different sessions to chip my way through it. Continue reading Oof.
Yes. I am aware how insane my notebooks make me look. Yes. I am a little insane. Continue reading Insane Ink
Damn. This book, man, this book. Tomm Coker and Jonathan Hickman have created a comic to absolutely get lost in. Every single scene is razor sharp, every page uses the comic form, and every character occupies a nasty and dark space in this book about power, money, and the horrible humans that hoard both of them. THE BLACK MONDAY MURDERS is something special. This is the kind of comic I want to create myself, and share with people, and celebrate as a height that the form of comics can reach. Continue reading An Absolute Creative Titan and True North
I could tell you this is to make me a better writer. I could say how this will enhance my DM skills. I could type all kinds of words in order, but there’s only one truth. This board game looks crazy fun, and I’m gonna enjoy myself. Yeet! Or as we say in this house: Yeast! Continue reading Dungeon, The Merchandise
This article on CrimeReads collects quotes from crime writing master Donald E. Westlake, and some of them are spectacular, but this one puts into context something I know is a problem but I couldn’t quite sum it up. He sums it up, the problem and the solution, in one paragraph. Genius. “(Novelists), when their characters drive cars, never feel compelled to describe precisely what the physical actions are of hands, feet, eyes, knees, elbows. Yet many of these same novelists, when their characters copulate, get into such detailed physical description you’d think they were writing an exercise book. We all … Continue reading Westlake on Writing
I was goofing about with my kid on Scratch because we have the Usborne ‘Coding for Beginners Using Scratch’ book and it’s fun and thinking with algorithms is crazy helpful, and we found the tutorial to make a Secret Number guessing game. My brain instantly knew I could make this into something for D&D, and that it might be fun, so I quickly knocked up my own version in my account and tooled around to figure out how to make the guessing relate to the d20 and then how to make the positive outcome give the player something. I think … Continue reading d20 Potion Ghost
Fun nerdy writing exercise. I bought 4 tiny corked bottles. I wanted to make potions for D&D. So I brainstormed a variety of colours and substances, wanting a good color spread, and used colours as inspiration for what the potions could do. A bit of creative problem solving gave me some options, some crummy, some fun, and it was a good ten minutes of thinking for an awesome cause. Now I have 4 potions I can use when I run adventures at school, and out of school. Plus: a bottle of blue liquid can be a different spell in every … Continue reading Writing Potions
If you ever want to study writing dialogue, read FLETCH. If you want to study how what someone says, and how they say it, can explain a character, read FLETCH. If you want to study how to progress plot through conversation instead of action, read FLETCH. I think the safe bet, and the lesson here is, read FLETCH. Continue reading The Dialogue of Fletch
I only recently discovered ROLLED & TOLD and I’m so glad I did. This is a D&D book/comic/magazine that features…all kinds of D&D related material: adventures, articles, maps, etc. It’s gorgeous and glorious and the latest issue keeps that quality high. But the best thing about this is the fact it reminds me there are other ways to write. I get so caught up in needing to write comics I forget to do other things. This is especially pertinent as I consider how many damn things I’m waiting on right now. Tried to work out where tonight’s weird feeling from … Continue reading Rolled & Told & Inspired
