I love OGNs, I want to see more of them, read more of them, make more of them.
As such, it excites me greatly to see Elsa Charretier and Matt Fraction launching a new series called NOVEMBER, that’s 3 HC OGNs, starting later this year.

I mean, I’m here for the OGn, but Elsa Charretier is an all time classic in the making, her art is phenomenally skillful and brilliant. Then match that with Matt Fraction writing and this announcement has me thirty shades of excited. This is the kind of creative team, and format, and genre/content that completely floors me. This is the biggest comic event I’m now waiting for in 2019.
I will be preordering this comic. I hope you do, too.
Last year we had MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES from Phillips/Brubaker, and it was a spectacular use of the format, allowing a CRIMINAL tale the space and daylight to breathe in a different way, and I won’t pretend like these are the first of their kind, OGNs have existed for a long time, but what I want to see is them become a viable consistent means of comic creation.
The idea of monthly floppies is to build brand awareness for months before the trade, as well as tell the tale in instalments so the readers get chunks and time to digest, and I dig that, but there’s also something magical about a nice slimline OGN that dive quick and deep and gets out.
Not to mention the realistic nature of the market. Floppy sales aren’t…amazing, especially because the profit margin for creators is razor thin. But a deluxe HC, of beautiful content, making a comic a real event when it lands, now that’s something I know I want to pursue.
Maybe it’s because I’m in no position to flood the market with minis, so I want to take my time and get things done slow and steady, and if that’s so, then that’s something to consider. Running on the monthly release treadmill purely because “that’s how it’s always been done” isn’t a good enough answer anymore.
So, I’m left to believe – the more we normalise the OGN, the more of them we’ll see. When the project suits/demands it.
For now, before I manage to release my next ETERNAL, I am 100% here for NOVEMBER and everything it means to me in comics right now.
